Assistant United States Attorney (Civil Rights) – U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Western District of Michigan

Job Details

The U.S. Attorney’s Office is currently accepting applications from experienced attorneys who have a strong litigation background for the position of Assistant U.S. Attorney with a primary focus on civil rights.

This position will advance the civil rights mission of the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Western District of Michigan in three primary ways:

  1. Combat discrimination by enforcing federal anti-discrimination laws that protect against discrimination on the basis of race, color, ethnicity, religion, sex, national origin, citizenship, immigration status, sexual orientation, gender identity, familial status, or disability, as well as those laws that protect the civil rights of servicemembers.
  2. Protect the right to vote by enforcing federal laws that protect voting rights and safeguard fair elections.
  3. Advance environmental justice by enforcing anti-discrimination laws that protect vulnerable populations from being overburdened by human health and environmental harms.

As to each of these three areas, the attorney may play various roles, including bringing enforcement actions, coordinating with the Civil Rights Division of the U.S. Department of Justice, and participating in community outreach to educate the public, build relationships, and facilitate the intake of potential cases. The balance between these functions may vary over time, but community outreach will be especially important in the early months. This engagement may include educating various community organizations about the relevant federal authority; explaining the process for filing a complaint; and building awareness, trust, and partnerships.
