This role in summary

We are seeking qualified candidates for a Senior Manager Legal Counsel – Disputes position to join our highly dynamic Global Law Department. The law department is made up of over 200 collaborative employees around the world who together are responsible for protecting the company and driving company strategy.

A successful candidate will drive and manage disputes from complaint to conclusion, collaborating with internal and outside counsel, specific subject matter experts, and business stakeholders. This role will be responsible for providing strategic guidance and legal counsel for all phases of Whirlpool’s highly-visible, complex litigation projects including consumer class actions, commercial disputes, toxic tort matters, product liability lawsuits, and affirmative recovery initiatives. One day you may be preparing a company executive for testimony or representing the company at a mediation. The next you may be updating senior leaders on a significant matter or counseling the business about how to mitigate risks going forward. Your responsibilities will include

  • Setting Strategy and Delivering Results on Disputes Portfolio
    • Strategic oversight of a portfolio of complex litigation matters
    • Driving and delivering case strategies and litigation results
    • Actively engaging in all aspects of the litigation process, including assessing risk, developing and driving strategy, managing outside counsel, reviewing pleadings, preparing for depositions, coordinating written discovery processes, attending hearings, and preparing/executing trial strategy
    • Efficiently managing outside legal counsel budget, work, and costs
  • Lead Dispute Risk Mitigation Projects & Strategic Counsel on Dispute Risks
    • Collaborate with law department and business partners on dispute-resolution and litigation-avoidance matters
    • Proactively develop and lead dispute risk mitigation projects that help advance Whirlpool’s strategy and protect the company
    • Support day-to-day direction, strategy, and legal advice to the business on dispute resolution issues impacting Whirlpool’s operations
    • Collaborate with other in-house counsel in the Legal Department on various litigation, dispute-resolution, and litigation-avoidance matters.
  • Work Effectively with Business Leaders
    • Work collaboratively with business partners and law department colleagues to ensure goal alignment on major projects, legal and business strategies, resources, and communications
    • Communicate with business leaders and internal clients on updates, strategy, and alignment
    • Partner with internal finance and accounting teams on cost management and trends

Minimum requirements

  • JD from an accredited law school
  • Admission to at least one state bar (with ability to seek admission to Michigan bar)
  • 7+ years of legal experience in class actions, product liability, or commercial litigation

Preferred skills and experiences

  • Extensive experience leading key aspects of product liability, commercial, class/mass action, consumer, and antitrust litigation in the US
  • Pre-trial/disposition, mediation, motion practice, and trial experience
  • Ability to prioritize and manage a large volume of concurrent projects
  • Strong analytical, research, organization and management skills
  • Exceptional interpersonal and communication (both written and oral) skills
  • Collaborative approach and mindset
  • Demonstrated ability to achieve results as a team leader or member of a cross functional team
  • Ability to provide strong strategic thought on major projects and disputes
  • Familiarity with affirmative recovery programs
  • In-house experience
  • Familiarity with IP-related disputes
  • International and regulatory experience, including product safety
