On March 2, 2018 The Chicago Committee’s Associate Board hosted its annual Associate Law Firm Boot Camp for junior associates at Ropes & Gray LLP. The Associate Law Firm Boot Camp aims to provide survival skills to diverse junior associates on how to succeed at their firms. The program consisted of three panels: What I Wish I Knew Then, Mentoring, Sponsorship & Professional Development, and Navigating Your Firm.
Lindsey Conley, Associate Board member (Hinshaw & Culbertson LLP), moderated the first panel: What I Wish I Knew Then. This panel included mid-level and senior attorneys providing advice based on their career experiences, including topics such as: business development, billing, and firm culture. Erin Stach (Senior Managing Associate, Dentons), Mita Lakhia (Associate, Drinker Biddle & Reath LLP), LaRue Robinson (Associate, Jenner & Block LLP), and Jinwon Jung (Associate, K&L Gates LLP) participated as panelists during this discussion.
The second panel, Mentoring Sponsorship & Professional Development, was led by Alejandro Montenegro, Associate Board member (Bryan Cave LLP), and consisted of senior attorneys providing best practices for finding and maximizing mentor and sponsor relationships. Faisal Delawalla (Associate, Bryan Cave LLP), Maryanne Woo (Partner, Reed Smith LLP), and Arefa Shakeel (Counsel, Ropes & Gray LLP) spoke during this panel.
The last panel of the day, Navigating Your Firm, was led by Ellen Hoover, Associate Board member (Ropes & Gray LLP), and included equity and managing partners discussing law firm operations. This panel included discussion on the economics of firm structure and associate expectations. Speakers included: Neill Jakobe (Partner, Ropes & Gray LLP), Michael Martinez (Partner, K&L Gates LLP), and Joseph McCoy (Partner, Riley Safer Holmes & Cancila LLP).
A networking reception followed the day’s programming.
